kurt-warner

Welcome to playoff time, everyone! It’s Week 14 in the NFL, which means most leagues with a three-week playoff format are beginning their playoffs.

With that in mind, it makes sense to look forward at all three weeks (Weeks 14, 15 and 16) to see how the quarterbacks look, both in their own offenses and on the schedule. Matchups aren’t everything, but they play a big part in winning a fantasy football league championship. Some quarterbacks have a great playoff schedule, some will be tested, and some should be on waivers by Wednesday. Let’s look at how the quarterbacks rank over the next three weeks.

1. Kurt Warner, ARI - @ San Francisco, @ Detroit, St. Louis

Warner has some of the best weapons surrounding him in the NFL, and has a pretty good schedule for your playoff push. With two of his three games indoors, and the third in San Francisco, the weather shouldn’t play much of a role, and anyone with both Detroit and St. Louis on the calendar should put up good numbers. The biggest thing to watch is his head, since he’s coming off a concussion. All three of Arizona’s opponents are allowing over 218 yards per game, putting them in the bottom half of the NFL, so I would feel safe with Warner as your top rated playoff QB.

rodgers2. Aaron Rodgers, GB – @ CHI, @ PIT, SEA

Rodgers has the good fortune of playing at the Bears, who have been really bad this year, at the Steelers, who have struggled without Troy Polumalu, and at home against Seattle. Both the Bears and Seahawks have allowed over 20 touchdown passes this year, and the Steelers have been vulnerable the last few weeks. Rodgers is a pretty safe call to start the next three weeks. Watch out for the weather, though; the frozen tundra of Green Bay might not be as bad as Chicago or Pittsburgh.

3. Joe Flacco, BAL – DET, CHI, @ PIT

Wow, look at the Bears and Steelers show up again! And Detroit! Coincidence? Probably not. The Ravens love to run the ball, but Ray Rice has emerged as a solid receiving threat as well. The Ravens are fighting to get into the playoffs, so all of these games matter. Flacco could give you big games in each of the next two weeks before a big divisional matchup with the Steelers in your championship week.

4. Brett Favre, MIN – CIN, @ CAR, @ CHI

That makes a Chicago Trifecta, with all three of the Bears’ opponents in the next three weeks making the top four on our list. Favre will get a lot of help by being indoors against Carolina and Chicago. Reality for Minnesota is that, without EJ Henderson, teams might be able to score on them more easily. If they’re fighting for home field advantage, they’ll need to win these games to stay near the top of the NFC. If Cincinnati, Carolina and Chicago load up to stop Adrian Peterson as most teams have this year, Favre could go off. Just look at what he did to Chicago in their first meeting!

5. Drew Brees, NO – @ ATL, DAL, TAM

Brees just put 419 yards on Washington, and now he gets to play in a dome for all three remaining games. My concern with Brees isn’t that he’ll perform poorly, but that the Saints will try to keep him healthy; now that they have a two-game lead on Minnesota for the best record in the NFC, running the ball might be more popular in second halves down the stretch. The Dallas game could turn into a shootout with the Saints’ banged up secondary, and a home date with Tampa might lock up your championship.

6. Peyton Manning, IND – DEN, @ JAX, NYJ

It’s really hard to put Manning outside of any top five list but.. Colts President Bill Polian confirmed that the Colts will rest any players that are tired or nicked up once home-field advantage for the playoffs is clinched. Polian cited a 1999 Week 17 game when the Colts lost LB Cornelius Bennett to a knee injury and proceeded to lose in the first round of the playoffs. Polian said that he doesn’t believe in momentum and rust is a non-factor that can be addressed in practice. The Colts won’t outright bench starters late in the year, but we don’t get the feeling that going undefeated means all that much to them.

7. Tom Brady, NE – CAR, @ BUF, JAX

Call this a hunch, but New England wants to get into the playoffs and won’t sit still while their offense underperforms. Carolina has the fifth ranked pass defense in the NFL, though, allowing only 12 touchdowns and under 200 yards per game so far this year. But coming off a bad week, Brady and company will want to make a statement at home. Buffalo won’t be an easy game either, but having Jacksonville for the championship week certainly helps. The Patriots need Brady to play better to make the post season, and history would tell us that Brady steps up in crunch time.

mcnabb8. Donovan McNabb, PHI – @ NYG, SF, DEN

When he gets DeSean Jackson back will play a huge part in him being a quality playoff quarterback for you. You also need to monitor how/when Andy Reid uses Michael Vick, who vultured two touchdowns on Sunday. My gut tells me that the game being in Atlanta had more to do with Vick’s performance, and that Reid won’t pull the same strings in a playoff push, but you still need to watch for it.

9. Vince Young, TEN – StL, MIA, SD

The Rams make the list as an opponent again! How about that! Young would qualify as a sleeper if he hadn’t been in the public spotlight so much since returning to the starting lineup. St. Louis gives him a great opportunity for points, and Miami is surprisingly in the lower third of the league in yards allowed. San Diego could be an intriguing game, as the Chargers try for a bye in the playoffs while the Titans fight for a wild card (and respectability). My concern here is Chris Johnson chasing the single-season rushing record and taking the ball out of Young’s hands, but the matchups could still make Young a 200 yard, 1-2 touchdown candidate every week.

10. Philip Rivers, SD – @ DAL, CIN, @ TEN

Rivers gets three teams fighting for playoff spots, with two on the road, which won’t be easy. But he’s been putting up numbers all year and should continue to do so. I’m not sure about his first week matchup against Dallas, but he could do some good things against Cincinnati and at Tennessee. If you have Antonio Gates, that’s a pretty handicap, too.

11. Tony Romo, DAL – SD, @ NO, @ WAS

The Cowboys keep chuckin’ the ball, but they have a rough road ahead. The games with San Diego and New Orleans could be a free-for-all through the air, but the Saints’ defense is tougher than they showed against Washington. I would keep a close eye on the injury report to see how the Saints’ secondary looks before being comfortable with Romo that day. Washington has been good this year, but did just allow 419 yards to Brees. This December might be the same as the rest of Romo’s career in the month: lots of potential for big things, but he needs to perform.

caution-sign12. Matt Schaub*, HOU – SEA, @ StL, @ MIA

We’ll mark this one with caution because of his injury on Sunday, but Schaub has arguably the best receiver in the game in Andre Johnson and a pretty soft schedule coming up. If he’s good to go, you should feel confident Schaub will get you numbers.

13. SLEEPER: Chad Henne, MIA – @ JAX, @ TEN, HOU

In case you missed it, the “running” Miami Dolphins asked Henne to throw the ball over 50 times on Sunday. And he had a heck of a game. Given his two road games aren’t against exceptional defenses, and then he gets Houston at home in championship week, Henne could be a solid sleeper play if you’re quarterback has rough games coming up (Jay Cutler/Carson Palmer owners).

14. David Garrard, JAX – MIA, IND, @ NE

It’s more likely that Maurice Jones-Drew has a big three weeks than Garrard, but the way Miami, Indianapolis and New England have thrown the ball recently Garrard might have to chuck to keep the Jaguars in games. Also remember that Tim Tebow has already been anointed the 2010 starter for the Jags, so Garrard’s playing for his job as well. OK, just kidding about Tebow… or am I?

Ben Roethlisberger15. Ben Roethlisberger, PIT – @ CLE, GB, BAL

I really haven’t liked much of what I’ve seen from Pittsburgh in the last few weeks other than Rashard Mendenhall, but the postgame press conference with Mike Tomlin makes me think they’ll get real in practice this week. There isn’t a better cure for a team’s ills than Cleveland, either. My biggest concern here is the big divisional game with Baltimore during championship week; if the playoffs are on the line there, and Ray Lewis plays the run the way he does when the chips are on the table, it might be a long week for Pittsburgh. Big gamble on Roethlisberger this year.

16. Matt Hasselbeck, SEA – @ HOU, TAM, @ GB

Again, the championship week matchup, this time in Green Bay in Week 16, doesn’t scream passing. But the Seahawks haven’t run the ball consistently all year. The Houston and Tampa games should be good for points, unless weather is miserable in Seattle, but I would caution heading to the playoffs with only Hasselbeck on your roster.

17. Kyle Orton, DEN – @ IND, OAK, @ PHI

Indianapolis is vulnerable to the pass, and Oakland likes to get into shootouts, too. But like I said about Garrard, it might be the running back that gets you paid this year. Knowshon Moreno has been solid, as has Correll Buckhalter, for Denver this year and Orton isn’t putting up big yards. If the Broncos run the ball to keep the opposing offenses off the field, you might see a few more 180-yard games from Orton.

18. Eli Manning, NYG – PHI, @ WAS, CAR

He’s struggled, and has a few teams with something to prove on the schedule. And, after what I saw from Brandon Jacobs on Sunday night, the Giants might keep the ball on the ground more against two pretty good defenses in Philly and Washington before a home game against Carolina that might be in 30+ mile per hour wind. I don’t have a ton of confidence in Eli’s schedule to provide you with a winner.

19. SLEEPER: Bruce Gradkowski, OAK – WAS, @ DEN, @ CLE

The Raiders are throwing the ball all over the place and Gradkowski’s been successful doing it. Washington’s not as bad as paper would tell you they were on Sunday, and the Broncos and Browns could get you some points in critical playoff matchups. If you’re sitting on a quarterback with a tough championship matchup (Orton, Hasselbeck, Roethlisberger), he might be a solid value add this week for the stretch.

seatSit Em!

20. Matt Cassel, KC – BUF, CLE, @ CIN

21. Carson Palmer, CIN – @ MIN, @ SD, KC

22. Jay Cutler, CHI – GB, @ BAL, MIN

23. Jake Delhomme, CAR – INJ

24. Matt Ryan, ATL – INJ

25. Mark Sanchez, NYJ – INJ

Colts coach Jim Caldwell confirmed that he will follow Tony Dungy’s philosophy of resting key players once he has home-field advantage locked up for the playoffs.

Carson Palmer

Last week we accurately picked Brett Favre to go big against Chicago, but a number of other quarterbacks jumped off the stat sheet with huge performances. Perhaps the most impressive Week 12 giant was Vince Young, who has been an amazing resurrection in Tennessee.

For many teams, like Chicago, the season is now unofficially over. For others, like Tennessee, it’s only getting interesting. But there are still lots of questions for teams that are in the clear, Indianapolis, that are climbing into the race, like Tennessee, or are playing out the schedule, like Chicago.

This week’s games could provide a lot of drama for fantasy owners.

Most leagues have Weeks 14-16 designated for playoffs as well. This is the week that owners really need to evaluate their options, and the playoff schedule moving forward. Now is the time to effectively position your waiver claims to help in the playoffs as much as address potential help in Week 13. We’ll rank the QBs for Week 13, but be ready for a comprehensive playoff ranking coming this weekend.

Week 13 Rankings

1. Philip Rivers, SD @ CLE – by this point in the season, if you don’t start looking for matchups like this you’re losing. Rivers is putting up great numbers, and plays a terrible team. Look out below, Cleveland!

2. Carson Palmer, CIN vs DET – see everything I said about Rivers.

3. Drew Brees, NO @ WAS – just in case you didn’t see him OWN New England, Brees is an MVP front runner. Watch him put 300 and at least two touchdowns on the Skins.

4. Matt Schaub, HOU @ JAX - look up at everything I said about Palmer and Rivers.

5. Peyton Manning, IND vs TEN – it won’t be Brees-Brady, but this could be a fun, high-scoring match up in a divisional rivalry reborn. Manning could have a huge week against a banged up secondary.

6. Vince Young, TEN @ IND – he isn’t managing the game right now. Young’s running well, and throwing well, and he’s going to have to put points on the board to beat Peyton Manning. Yes, Chris Johnson will have a big game. But teams like the Colts (ie good ones) game plan to eliminate the other team’s best player; that means the Colts are going to force Young to beat them. He might, too.

7. Brett Favre, MIN @ ARI – again, great quarterback against a questionable secondary. This might end as Favre’s best season.

8. Aaron Rodgers, GB vs BAL – Denis Dixon looked pretty good against the Ravens last week. Rodgers is better in every aspect of the game than Dixon, who was starting for the first time. This might be a trap game for the Ravens, and the Packers are fighting for their playoff lives.

9. Joe Flacco, BAL @ GB – he put 289 yards on Pittsburgh last week. Yes, Pittsburgh doesn’t have a shut down corner like Charles Woodson, but Flacco’s been getting a lot of cheap yards by finding Ray Rice out of the backfield.

10. Jay Cutler, CHI vs STL – the rumor mill is buzzing in Chicago that Lovie Smith and Jerry Angelo should/will be fired. The Bears come home after getting destroyed in Minnesota to an unhappy fan base with the perfect remedy: the Rams. Everything in logic says Cutler should be up near Palmer and Rivers, but it’s going to be around freezing in Chicago on Sunday and Cutler hasn’t played well even against losers like Cleveland. I wouldn’t drop Cutler until Monday (unless you can grab Young off waivers still).

On the fence! My jury’s still out on these guys this week:

nfl_g_delhomme_300CAR: Jake Delhomme is not good. Yes, he’s got Tampa this week, but he made high school mistakes last week. Delhomme’s history indicates he bounces back from awful performances well, but I’m not sure he’s got it any more.

PHI: Donovan McNabb won’t have DeSean Jackson or Brian Westbrook in Atlanta this week. My issue isn’t with McNabb as much as I wonder who he’ll throw the ball to for your points.

NYJ: Mark Sanchez is falling apart, but the Bills have given up some yards through the air this year. The weather won’t be a factor because they’re playing in Toronto’s dome, but how Sanchez approaches a division rival that picked him off five times earlier this year makes him intriguing to me.

DAL/NYG: the weather in New York might be miserable for a game that could, because of injuries to their runnings games, see a need for lots of throwing. I’m not sure how Tony Romo’s back or Eli Manning’s legs will hold up if it’s freezing in the Meadowlands.

ambulanceInjuries! Check back later this weekend for updates on the following situations as they develop:

DEN: Kyle Orton’s ankle might continue to be an issue for the Broncos. Check back closer to game time for info on their plans.

ATL: Matt Ryan’s already been ruled out for the Falcons’ game against Philadelphia. Chris Redman wasn’t bad in relief, but Philly isn’t an easy win.

PIT: Big Ben has locker room drama to deal with on top of getting his head right after a concussion. He was a late scratch last week, and the Steelers have Oakland (Dixon might be good enough).

ARI: Kurt Warner had a headache last weekend and didn’t play, and Matt Leinart was mediocre (as always). Keep an eye out for who’s starting here, and whether or not Warner can make it a full game against Jared Allen and Company.

Bench! Leave these guys on your bench or, more appropriately, send them to the waiver wire:

MIA: Chad Henne gets the honor of playing New England after they got their doors blown off by Drew Brees. Good luck, kid.

CLE, DET, OAK, STL: You can’t play Jimmy Clausen, Colt McCoy or Sam Bradford this week, so don’t sweat anyone on any of these rosters *(except maybe Calvin Johnson).

Check out all our Rankings, in our usual start sit fashion.

Last week a number of quarterback went down to injury, with Ben Roethlisberger and Kurt Warner both suffering mild concussions. Because of these injuries, Top Fantasy Football felt it would be most prudent to wait until Wednesday night for the latest roster status updates to give you the best start-sit advice for your fantasy quarterbacks this week.

There are other positions where injuries are going to play a role, though. Ahmad Bradshaw is out for the Giants, so with Brandon Jacobs still coming back from his own health issues it might be time for Eli Manning to have a big week. Tony Romo has a stiff back, but the bigger concern is that Jason Witten is listed as a game-time decision.

With so many injuries effecting NFL rosters, knowing who’s healthy this week will be critical to getting a win for your fantasy playoff positioning. Let’s rank the quarterbacks for Week 12.

1. Brett Favre, MIN vs. CHI – his entire roster appears to be healthy, and the Bears are playing miserable defense. Though Adrian Peterson has historically torched the Bears, Chicago might get desperate and start chucking themselves. IF this game turns into a shootout, Favre could be huge.

2. Aaron Rodgers, GB @ DET* – in case you missed it, Brady Quinn threw for over 300 yards and had three first quarter touchdown passes against the Lions last week. Nothing against Quinn, but he’s a couple years, a head coach and an offense from being Rodgers. This game is on Thursday, and it’s likely the Packers will be the thankful roster.

3. Carson Palmer, CIN vs. CLE – with an injured Cedric Benson questionable with a bad hip, and coming off a stunning loss to Oakland, the Bengals have the perfect opponent to bounce back against: the Browns. Smart money says Palmer has an enormous day.

Of the top three quarterbacks this week, I would be shocked if each of the three didn’t throw for well over 300 yards and had at least two touchdowns each. All three teams are playing awful defenses that have given up big plays all year. If you have one of these three, feel pretty good heading into Thanksgiving.

4. Philip Rivers, SD vs. KC – the Chargers are starting to put a strangle-hold on the AFC West, and this will be another game where Rivers could excel. He has lost a few touchdowns to a suddenly rejuvenated LaDanian Tomlinson the past couple weeks, and the Chiefs’ defense played well against the Patiots. Rivers should still have a solid week.

5. Matt Schaub, HOU vs. IND – the Colts’ secondary continues to be banged up, and Schaub had a good game agaist them just a few weeks ago. The Texans will want to make a statement on Sunday and knock Indianapolis from the ranks of the unbeaten, and they’ll likely have to do it through the air.

6. Joe Flacco, BAL vs. PIT – this is a big week for the 5-5 Ravens, and the Steelers will undoubtedly focus on stopping Ray Rice. That means it will come down to Flacco making plays through the air against a Pittsburgh defense still missing their rock, Troy Polamalu. Flacco could have a big day in a crucial game.

7. Tom Brady, NE @ NO*

8. Drew Brees, NO vs. NE* – Monday night’s matchup between the undefeated Saints and Patriots could turn into a legendary shootout. Because both defense have played well lately, these two signal callers fall a ways in the rankings, but they could easily both top 300 yards. Because New Orleans has a stronger running game, I would give the edge on paper to Brady.

9. Peyton Manning, IND @ HOU – it might qualify as herecy, but I think Manning doesn’t have as big of a day this week in Houston. Their last meeting was only a 20-17 Indianapolis win, and Houston’s pass rush did a good job of harassing Manning. Indianapolis might win the game, but I think Schaub has the better stats.

10. Donovan McNabb, PHI vs. WAS – McNabb didn’t have an incredible game against the Bears, but he got a lot of help from LeSean McCoy. This might be the week that the Eagles’ lack of depth in the backfield catches up with them, and the Eagles need to win a division game against a bad Redskins team. It might be on McNabb to win it for Philly this week.

The balance of the top ten rounds out with seven more quarterbacks that should get you 240-300 yards and a couple touchdowns each. There are some prime matchups this week for the top tier quarterbacks, and some quality fantasy points could be had in many of this week’s games.

In the second group of ten, there are some quarterbacks with question marks. Either their health, their opponent, or the players around them.

11. David Garrard, JAX @ SF

12. Kurt Warner, ARI @ TEN – check back Sunday for an injury update, but he expects to start.

matt hasselbeck13. Ben Roethlisberger, PIT @ BAL – like Warner, he left last week’s game. He does, however, expect to play Sunday.

14. Matt Hasselback, SEA @ STL

15. Matt Ryan, ATL vs. TAM

16. Tony Romo, DAL vs. OAK - check Thursday for the status of Romo’s back and Witten’s availability.

17. Eli Manning, NYG @ DEN* – no Bradshaw and a limited Jacobs could mean Manning goes big.

The next three quarterbacks could take advantage of bad defenses, but have too many issues around them to be a lock for a huge day.

18. Chad Henne, MIA vs. BUF

19. Vince Young, TEN vs. ARI

20. Jason Campbell, WAS vs. PHI

All I’ll say here is, if you’re ranked lower than Jason Campbell as a fantasy quarterback, you should be on waivers. But you might be desperate, or be dealing with an injury, so we’ll finish the rankings anyway.

jay cutler21. Trent Edwards, BUF vs, MIA

22. Jay Cutler, CHI @ MIN

23. Jake Delhomme, CAR @ NYJ

24. Daunte Culpepper, DET vs GB* – Matthew Stafford not expected to play Thursday.

25.  Marc Bulger, STL vs SEA

26. Matt Cassel, KC @ SD

27. Mark Sanchez, NYJ vs. CAR

28. Alex Smith, SF vs. JAX

29.  Brady Quinn, CLE @ CIN

30. Josh Freeman, TB @ ATL

31. Bruce Gradkowski, OAK @ DAL*

32. Kyle Orton, DEN vs. NYG* – check back Thursday to make sure his ankle’s good to go

Injuries were all over the fantasy football world this past weekend, and the tight end position (somehow) stayed away from the bad mojo. Sorry Owen Daniels, you missed your week to go down!

There are some intriguing matchups coming this week, with a lot of defenses starting to struggle and running backs and receivers getting hurt (or suspended, Dwayne Bowe), the tight end position could continue to be as good for smart fantasy owners as many Number Two receivers and running backs.

This week has some nice divisional games between great TEs and bad teams, there could be some money made at this position this week. Let’s take a look at where the money should be in Week 11.

Week 11 – TE Start of the Week – Brent Celek, PHI @ CHI

OK,perhaps a little off the radar here for the top pick of the week, but have you watched the Bears’ defense lately? Their secondary is miserable! They have, however, been pretty good against the run. So with Brian Westbrook having serious “career conversations” with specialists, it might be time to watch Donovan McNabb put up HUGE numbers in his home town. Celek and DeSean Jackson should be HUGE this week.

A Few More Fantasy Studs To Play In Week 11

Vernon Davis, SF @ GB Davis continues to be a rock star as San Francisco’s leading receiver, and it appears that the 60 yards Michael Crabtree’s getting each week has opened up the field for Davis to be even bigger. The Packers have good linebacker and run a 3-4, but thei’ve been vulnerable to TEs this year.
Visanthe Shiancoe, MIN vs SEA Adrian Peterson is a beast, and Percy Harvin and Sidney Rice have emerged as top WRs, but this could be a blow out for the Vikings. Shiancoe is a big target in the red zone and Favre likes to spread the wealth. He might get a TD for you this year.
Jeremy Shockey, NO @ TB The Bucs aren’t good, and the Saints offense hasn’t been the 40-point giant they were for the first seven weeks. The Saints will probably try to run away and hide in this one, and their recipe for success early was to get Shockey into the end zone.
Kellen Winslow, TB vs NO Winslow has a history of going big when there’s another Hurricane on the field, and he followed Shockey at TE at The U. Tampa would be wise to look for him to control the ball and continue moving the chains. He could get yards and touchdowns.
Jason Witten, DAL vs WAS Just in case you hadn’t heard, the Redskins are… bad. Their defense has been mediocre, and the Cowboys are trying to put a strangle hold on the NFC East. Witten should be good for both touches and yards, and should get into the end zone in this rivalry game.

bp

Week 11 – TE Sleeper of the Week – Brandon Pettitgrew, DET vs. CLE

Monday Night Football should give you more than enough reasons to play ANYONE on the Detoit Lions… just as an aside here, when was the last time the Lions were clearly the better team in a game? Seriously? Pettitgrew has improved weekly and could have a nice week in yards and could get into the end zone as well.

sp_raiders240484cs

Week 11 – TE Sit of the Week – Zach Miller, OAK vs DEN

The Broncos have been struggling, and will have minimal offense coming this week because of injuries. That means the defense will have to step up and play like they did for the first six weeks of the season, and they get an easy opportunity to bounce back against the Raiders. Miller’s their leading receiver, and Brian Dawkins will be all over him on Sunday. I wouldn’t bet the house on Miller going big this week,

dallas-clark-ppr

Some Fantasy Question Marks for Week 11

Greg Olsen, CHI vs PHI Olsen will be a fantasy question mark until he isn’t getting doubled every snap. It also doesn’t help that Jay Cutler likes to throw interceptions in the red zone and Ron Turner, the Bears Offensive Coordinator, puts in an extra tackle for Olsen on the 1 yard line to run a bootleg to… Desmond Clark and Jason McKie. The Bears are a mess.
Dallas Clark, IND @ BAL The Ravens are hearing that their win against Cleveland wasn’t that special, and they need this win to stay in their divisional race. Stopping Clark will be one of their priorities.
Tony Gonzalez, ATL @ NYG Similar to Olsen, this comes down to a struggling QB not helping his skill position guys get fantasy points. The Giants are fighting for a playoff spot, and will try to get Matt Ryan to make (more) mistake.
Heath Miller, PIT @ KC Big Ben hasn’t been looking at Miller in the red zone as much lately, but has found him for the key third downs. Miller might be a strong play for a few catches and yards, but not in the end zone.
Ben Watson, NE vs NYJ This might actually qualify as a sleeper, but the Jets pass defense has been good this year. They’ll pay enough attention to Randy Moss and Wes Welker that Watson might vulture a TD, but he never gets manyyards.

Smart money's on Vernon Davis vs. Chicago this week.

Vernon Davis vs. Chicago is a nice matchup this week - remember they play Thursday!

The tight end position continues to evolve in the NFL season, and now that everyone’s played eight games we can feel a little bit better about projecting stats out over the rest of the season.

What we can’t project, though, is injuries. The loss of Owen Daniels undoubtedly hurt his owners, who are likely looking for a replacement via trade still. What other tight ends can, and will, get hurt we don’t know, but that’s the spark of fantasy football. The gamble is on the potential and likely production, not hoping against injury.

Some struggling defenses will be tested by quality tight ends this week, which could make for big fantasy weeks from the position again.  Despite Jon Gruden’s love for the wild cat, the tight end is this year’s trendy offensive revolution. This week should be another highlight reel from the position.

Only the Giants and Texans have a bye this week, so Kevin Boss owners will need to surf the waiver wire for help. Let’s rank some tight ends.

Week 10 – TE Start of the Week – Vernon Davis, SF

IN three weeks since the Niners’ bye, Davis has 20 catches for 215 yards and four touchdowns. Last week, against the Titans, he caught ten balls for 102 yards. He’s obviously becoming Alex Smith’s primary target in an emerging passing game since Michael Crabtree signed, and they will feast on an underachieving Chicago defense on Thursday night.

A Few More Fantasy Studs To Play In Week 10

Jeremy Shockey, NO @ StL St. Louis is… just bad. Shockey has re-established himself as a premier TE in New Orleans and could have a solid week at the expense of perhaps the worst team in the NFL. If he doesn’t get the ball in the red zone I would be shocked.
Tony Gonzalez, ATL @ CAR The Panthers have really struggled defensively this year, and this is a big divisional game for the Falcons. Gonzalez is having another great season, and is Matt Ryan’s best red zone target.
Kellen Winslow, TAM @ MIA This is an ideal game to get Winslow on the field. Tampa finally won a game, and their rookie quarterback was smart enough to find Winslow in the end zone. Winslow played his college ball at The U, so returning to Miami after a good performance could lead to another big week.
Antonio Gates, SD vs. PHI As long as Philip Rivers is happy throwing the ball, and the Chargers fail trying to run it, Gates will be a good fantasy play. Vincent Jackson has stolen some of Gates’ touches in the red zone, but this could be a good week for Gates against a Philly defense that has given up some good days to opposing TEs this year.
Jason Witten, DAL @ GB Witten might have lost touches to the wide receivers in Dallas early this season, but the Packers have a couple stud corners and Tony Romo might need to look up his best friend more often this week.

celek

Week 10 – TE Sleeper of the Week – Brent Celek, PHI

Celek and the Eagles head to San Diego to play a Chargers team that put a heavy rush on Eli Manning this past weekend. The Giants were able to get good yards and a touchdown from Kevin Boss, so Celek, who had a touchdown of his own on Sunday, could be a key figure in the Eagles’ offense.

Week 8 – TE Sit of the Week – Boss, NYG

Kevin Boss and the New York Giants are off this week. Make sure you adjust your roster accordingly.

golsen1_600

Some Fantasy Question Marks for Week 9

Greg Olsen, CHI @ SF Olsen will have a tough test against the good linebackers in San Francisco Thursday night. He caught three touchdowns on Sunday, so he could get more attencion from Patrick Willis and friends.
Dallas Clark, IND vs NE The battles between the Patriots and Colts are legendary, and after Clark caught 14 balls last week you better believe the New England defense will know where he is all the time. Might be a better week to be Pierre Garcon than Clark.
Jon Carlson, SEA @ ARI Arizona allowed three touchdowns to Olsen last week, so Carlson’s value might be higher than you would think.
Heath Miller, PIT vs. CIN This game could very easily be for control of the AFC North, and Miller is a big target for Roethlisberger. Mike Wallace has taken some catches, and touchdowns, away from Miller, but the Steelers look at their TE more at home.
Zach Miller, OAK vs KC JaMarcus Russel’s top target against a bad defense could be a perfect recipe for success… until you consider they’re still the Raiders.

jeremy shockeyThis has been one of the strongest fantasy seasons for tight ends in recent memory, and Week Eight might be the banner week at the position.

The bye week hits for owners of Pittsburgh’s Heath Miller, and would have for Washington’s Chris Cooley if he hadn’t broken his foot on Monday night. The injury presents a headache for Cooley owners because Fred Davis would be the logical drop/add, but the Redskins are off this week.

With the exception of Miller and Cooley/Davis owners, the matchups present lots of potential gold at the tight end position this week.

Week 8 – TE Start of the Week – Dallas Clark, IND

Clark has been a top notch TE all year, and with Houston’s Owen Daniels down it appears Clark is jumping to the top of the heap in TE rankings. He’ll go against Daniels’ Texans this weekend, who have been vulnerable to the pass and could give up big numbers to Clark if they focus too much on Reggie Wayne or Pierre Garcon.

A Few More Fantasy Studs To Play In Week 9

Vernon Davis, SF vs WAS Davis continues to be the top red zone target in San Francisco, and Tennessee has had all sorts of issues against the pass. He could get another multiple-touchdown performance this weekend.
Tony Gonzalez, ATL vs. WAS The issues the Redkins have been dealing with this season haven’t helped them play ball, and Gonzalez had a big week again in Week Eight. He’s a top red zone target and has become Matt Ryan’s best friend on third downs.
Jason Witten, DAL @ PHI This is the prime time game, and when the lights are bright history shows that Tony Romo likes to look for Witten. Asante Samuel could lock down Miles Austin, so Witten might become the Boys’ number one target this week.
Antonio Gates, SD @ NYG They’re still searching for offense, and Gates will see increased attention with Chris Chambers no longer being with the Chargers. The Giants haven’t been very good defending receivers, so their rush will have to take Gates out of the mix.
Greg Olsen, CHI vs ARI The Bears pass protection is miserable, so Olsen might be asked to play a bigger role as Jay Cutler continues to get less time to get rid of the ball. Arizona’s defense has struggled as well, so this might become a shoot out. Also of note, Devin Hester has missed practice this week, increasing the potential for Olsen.

Week 9 – TE Sleeper of the Week – Jeremy Shockey, NO

The Saints host the Panthers, who haven’t scared many opponents this year. He’s become the TE that earned top draft status in New York again, and this renaissance has helped him earn the favor of Drew Brees as well. Watch for him to become a red zone target this week.

Week 8 – TE Sit of the Week – Owen Daniels, HOU

In case you didn’t hear, he’s done for the season. Make sure you make your waiver adjustments accordingly.

Some Fantasy Question Marks for Week 9

Brent Celek, PHI vs DAL Dallas will try to contain DeSean Jackson, but he’s clearly become the man in Philly. Celek got off to a hot start, but he’s cooled lately. Not a terrible play still, but might not get as many yards as you might hope.
Marcedes Lewis, JAX vs. KC Kansas City is really bad, but David Garrard hasn’t been very good this year either. Maurice Jones Drew keeps busting out for big games, which has limited the number of third downs on which Garrard would look for Lewis
Kevin Boss, NYG vs. SD Eli Manning continues looking for Boss, but the emergence of their young receivers has limited his yards. He might be a good bet for a touchdown this week, though.
Kellen Winslow, TB vs GB The Packers defense has struggled against the pass, and might be without a couple guys in their secondary this week. Coming off the bye, with a rookie starting at quarterback, Winslow could be Tampa’s best receiver. Or he could disappear.
Heath Miller, PIT @ DEN Denver’s defense has been so good this year (until Week Eight), but Miller is a big target for Big Ben in the red zone. If Champ Bailey and Brian Dawkins get caught up watching Mike Wallace or Santonio Holmes, Miller might get some nice points.

Jamaal Charles appears to be the new starting RB in Kansas City.

Jamaal Charles appears to be the new starting RB in Kansas City.

Jeff Risdon of RealGM.com is reporting that running back Larry Johnson has played his final game with the Kansas City Chiefs. Risdon claims that a source inside the team has indicated that Johnson will be released before the Chiefs next game, which is in two weeks.

Johnson was outspoken over the weekend on Twitter, trashing Kansas City’s first year head coach Todd Haley. His tweets included slurs that have offended many people, and various anti-defamation groups have called for strong action from the NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell.

On Tuesday, the Chiefs informed Johnson that he was not welcome around any Chiefs players or at any of the team’s facilities.

The apparent pending departure of Johnson means Jamaal Charles will become the man at the top of the Chiefs’ depth chart. Charles, in his second year out of Texas, has 116 yards on the season, and is averaging five yards per carry.

Charles, at just 5′11 and 199 pounds, is smaller than Johnson but is considered a better receiver out of the backfield than Johnson. He is also averaging almost six yards per carry on first and second downs this year for Kansas City.

In deeper leagues, or if you have multiple backs on bye in Week Nine or beyond, Charles might be a worth sleeper for a bench. He’s certainly worth taking Johnson’s spot on your fantasy team’s roster, just as he has in Kansas City.

San Francisco's Vernon Davis could benefit from the Niners' change at QB.
San Francisco’s Vernon Davis could benefit from the Niners’ change at QB.

This has been one of the strongest fantasy seasons for tight ends in recent memory, and Week Eight might be the banner week at the position.

Week 8 – TE Start of the Week – Owen Daniels, HOU

Daniels is your tight end leader in receiving yards (497 yards) and trails only San Francisco’s Vernon Davis’ six touchdowns (five). To put that into perspective, he has as many yards as Santonio Holmes (10th overall in the NFL) and more touchdowns than Randy Moss, Steve Smith (CAR) or his teammate, Andre Johnson. This week, Daniels gets a nice matchup against the Buffalo Bills. Buffalo’s defense has done a nice job against the pass this year, but they haven’t faced an offense with as many options as Houston will present this week. Keep an eye on Johnson’s bruised lung, too; if he can’t go or isn’t 100 percent, Daniels might see more of the ball between the end zones.

A Few More Fantasy Studs To Play In Week 8

Vernon Davis, SF @ IND Even if Bob Sanders plays this week, the Colts defense has been vulnerable to the pass. Davis caught three touchdowns from Alex Smith in the second half last week, and should be able to get free now that Michael Crabtree is playing outside.
Dallas Clark, IND vs. SF San Francisco has good linebackers and a tough defense, but somehow Peyton Manning has done whatever he wanted all season. Clark has benefitted from Reggie Wayne and Pierre Garcon both having outstanding seasons, and should be a factor again.
Jason Witten, DAL vs. SEA Seattle’s linebackers have struggled this year and Dallas is starting to spread the field with Miles Austin. If the Seahaawks key on Austin, Tony Romo might go back to his old friend Witten for a big afternoon.
Antonio Gates, SD vs OAK As San Diego continues to struggle to put together a running game, Gates and Vincent Jackson continue to be the best options for the Chargers to score.
Greg Olsen, CHI vs CLE The Bears have now been embarrased in consecutive games, both of which were on the road. If they want to get the home fans back on their side, they’ll need to play well and Cleveland might be the perfect medicine. Jay Cutler likes throwing the ball to Olsen almost as much as he does Bears’ opponents, too.

marcedes lewis

Week 8 – TE Sleeper of the Week – Marcedes Lewis, JAX

Lewis is a big target for David Garrard that could take advantage of Tennessee’s banged up secondary. Tennessee’s defense has been admirable against the run this year, so Lewis might vulture a touchdown away from Maurice Jones-Drew.

john carlson

Week 8 – TE Sit of the Week – John Carlson, SEA

Seattle plays a hungry Dallas defense this week that will feature DeMarcus Ware and his new contract. If Dallas can create a pash rush early, Matt Hasselbeck could have a long day. Carlson might disappear on Sunday.

Some Fantasy Question Marks for Week 8

Tony Gonzalez, ATL @ NO It says alot about New Orleans’ defense that you would question playing Gonzalez, but the Saints have been tough against everyone but Miami.
Brandon Pettitgrew, DET vs StL Pettitgrew is developing into the first round player the Lions hoped he would become, and this could be a good week for him. Calvin Johnson returns from injury after the bye, and they’re playing the Rams at home.
Zach Miller, OAK @ SD Miller’s their best option in the passing game, but they haven’t got a quarterback to get him the ball. He’s a question mark because they can’t run and don’t have anyone under center.
Jeremy Shockey, NO vs. ATL The Falcons have done a good job on tight ends this year, and Shockey has earned the attention of Saints opponents now.
Visanthe Shiancoe, MIN @ GB In the season’s marquee game, Brett Favre might need to find his tight end to get the ball into the end zone against a good Green Bay secondary. The Packers linebackers are improving each week, though.
